Critical reflection

At the start of the course, my goals were to refine my communication skills through the multiple classes planned for me in the effective communication module and build up my confidence in terms of communication. I felt that I managed to reduce the gap between my current self and my goals through the 2 months’ worth of lessons and post-class activities. In my opinion, I became more confident when speaking in front of an audience and handle interactions with the crowd. Along the way, I picked up several vital skills in communication such as body language. How I portray myself in-front of a crowd is important as it shows how confident I am. An audience would be more attentive to a presenter who is more confident in both spoken and non-verbal skills. What I have done well is I managed to maintain eye contact with my audience as there were many sessions of pitching to my classmates in the attempts to practice for the final presentation. However, I received feedback that my voice was monoto

Lindsey, R. (2020, August 14).  Climate change: atmospheric carbon dioxide . Climate.gov.  https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/climate-change-atmospheric-carbon-dioxide In this article, Lindsey (2020) reported that the global average carbon dioxide in 2019 reached 409.8 parts per million (ppm). The concentration reached its peak as compared to figures for the past 800,000 years. The increase in carbon is largely due to the burning of fossil fuels for energy. Fossil fuels consist of carbon that plants drew out from the air millions of years ago, and we humans are bringing the carbon back into the air by burning fossil fuels in a span of several hundred years. Lindsey stated that atmospheric carbon dioxide rose 100 times faster in the past 60 years compared to non-human increases 11,000 years ago. Lindsey mentioned that greenhouse gases stores heat and radiates it slowly as time passes. While carbon dioxide does not take in as much heat per molecule when compared

Assignment 2: Smart Parking Systems - Draft 2 (Summary & Reader Response)

Revisied 12/05/2020 In the article “IoT based Smart Parking Systems for Smart Cities”, Joshi (2020) stated that smart parking systems provide consumers with options of smart parking spaces. Smart parking leads to “effective management of parking space that will manage the space efficiently.” Joshi mentioned that smart parking utilizes sensors embedded in pavements to detect available parking spaces, transmitting information to the cloud. Joshi remarked that smart parking enables users to reserve and monitor parking spaces ahead of time, minimizing the hassles of physically finding the best parking space. Joshi also commented that the demerit of smart parking is the downloading of its application and inputting personal data for single usage, which brings inconvenience to tourists. There will also be additional funds required to enhance the accuracy of the system. After reading the article, I feel that information about smart parking was not elaborated on, which may lead to an unbalanced

Formal Letter (Descriptive Reflection)

Revised 12/05/2020  Dear Professor Brad   My name is Toh Jing Kai. I am currently studying Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering (Building Services) at the Singapore Institute of Technology. My purpose in writing this letter is to introduce myself for the module, SIE 2016 Effective Communication. Since young, I have been curious about how things work. My father fixes appliances as a hobby and I was fascinated by how the interior or concepts of different products were materialized. I grew to love science as days passed, and ultimately studied mechanical engineering in Singapore Polytechnic. In year 3, I took energy as a specialization module where I gained a deeper understanding of renewable energy, leading me towards enrolling in my current undergraduate program. Fate decided my connection to engineering was not over. During my national service, I was posted to artillery vocation where I learned the basics of how radars work and got a chance to test it in Thailand during an over

Task 3: The importance of communication skills for engineers

“Employers identify communication as one of the basic competencies every graduate should have, asserting that the ability to communicate is valuable for obtaining employment and maintaining successful job performance.” Sherwyn Morreale, Michael Osborn & Judy Pearson, Professors of Communication (2000) What is being conveyed is communication skills are essential to excel in job interviews.
