Assignment 2: Smart Parking Systems - Draft 1 (Summary & Reader Response)

In the article “IoT based Smart Parking Systems for Smart Cities”, Joshi (2020) stated that smart parking systems provide consumers with options of parking spaces. This leads to “effective management of parking space that will manage the space efficiently.”  It is mentioned that smart parking utilizes sensors embedded in pavements to detect available parking spaces, transmitting information to the cloud. The webpage remarked that the purpose of smart parking is to enable users to reserve and monitor parking spaces ahead of time, minimizing the hassles of physically finding the best parking space. The webpage commented that the demerit of smart parking is the downloading of its application, input personal data just for single usage, bringing inconvenience to tourists. There will also be additional funds required to enhance the accuracy of the system.

After reading the article, I feel that information about smart parking was not elaborated on, which may lead to an unbalanced view by its readers. There are several other factors that should be considered before judging smart parking for its effectiveness. Smart parking is indeed a system that can provide users with ease and comfort with a touch of their mobile screens. Finding a parking space is simplified with a condition; investments must be made to make it happen. First-time users must go through the hassle of inputting their personal data into the application, at the risk of exposing important information hackers may get a hold of. With the aid of two-step verifications for transactions, the risks could be brought down and there are already several applications that require the personal information of the users in the market. The benefits of smart parking outshine the demerits as there are many other points not brought up in the article such as reduced cost of operating a car park, decreasing driving-related stresses, and minimizing the impact driving causes to the environment.
